Recently, here comes the great prosperity of auction season of 2020. On July 10, Sotheby's "Contemporary Art Day Sale" , Bonhams "Modern And Contemporary Art" , Christie's "Modern And Contemporary Art Evening Sale"and Global Joint Night Auction "One: A Global Sale Of The 20th Century"were held in Hong Kong and many great pieces of artistic masters from East and West were on auction. Among 276 pieces, 242 of art works were sold successfully,with a turnover rate of 87.7%."One: A Global Sale Of The 20th Century" achieved more than US$400 million(US$300 million in New York).During several auctions in Hong Kong, 2 pieces of work were sold with a price over HK$100 million,13 pieces of work were sold over HK$10 million.

Christie's Hong Kong“Modern And Contemporary Art Evening Sale”

“Modern And Contemporary Art Evening Sale”, one of the two highlights of Christie's Hong Kong Auction in July, was held on the July 10, bringing together many masterpieces of modern art, contemporary art and representative works of Southeast Asia. A total of 45 pieces of works were sold, with a total turnover of HK$ 607,172,500 and a turnover rate of 95.6%.

San Yu's Most Expensive Flower Series

Chrysanthèmes Blanches Dans Un Pot Bleu Et Blanc (White Chrysanthemum In A Blue And White Jardiniere) by San Yu in his later years, is one of his most exquisite works with red background and white chrysanthemum. This work was once held by famous collectors from all over the world. Before auction, it attracted the attention of collectors with an appraisal estimate of HK $60 million to HK $80 million.It aroused collectors’ fierce bidding on site and over the phones. Its hammer price is HK $167 million, and HK$191 million with commission included. It updated San Yu's most expensive Top 4 and became the Top 1 high price work of his flower series. Another animal themed work Rooster And Serpent by San Yu was estimated at HK $22-32 million, and was finally sold at HK $21.72 million.

Zao Wou-Ki's three works ranked Top 2, Top 3 and Top 5

The 1960s were the peak of Zao Wou-Ki's artistic and personal level. 18.11.66, written in 1966, has brilliant colors and wild strokes, showing the artistic essence of Zao Wou-Ki incisively and vividly. The work was estimated at HK $68 million to HK $88 million before auction.It was finally sold at HK $ 99 million and a turnover price of 114 million including commission. In addition, Zao Wou-Ki's other two works became Top 3 and Top 5 in this auction.

Huang Yuxing, Javier Calleja and Chen Ke Broke Their Personal Records

Chinese painter Huang Yuxing's previous Top 4 most expensive items were all listed in 2019. River , auctioned on July 9 in Phillips Hong Kong, is his first high price lot in 2020. The auction of his large-scale oil painting Enlightening this time triggered a fierce bidding of nearly 70 times, and were finally sold for HK $8.645 million, with an over-low-estimate rate of + 620.42%, which directly broke his personal auction record.

In addition, Spanish artist Javier Calleja and Chen Ke, a Chinese female painter born in the 1970s, also set their new personal records. The over-low-estimate rate of Javier Calleja’ art work is +934.72%!

The auction also brings together a series of the most representative masterpieces of Chu Teh-Chun, Wu Guanzhong and Liu Ye. Christie's “One: A Global Sale Of The 20th Century”

Christie's “One: A Global Sale Of The 20th Century”, which attracted people’s attention, was first on auctioned in Hong Kong, and then successively relay by Paris, London and New York, presenting an unprecedented global 20th century art auction. The oil painting Frost (1) by German artist Gerhard Richter is one of several paintings completed by the artist in 1989. Its pre-auction estimate was between HK $48 million and HK $68 million,it aroused the bidding of all collectors globally and it was finally sold at HK $79.25 million.

The Great Work of George Condo Became the Top 2 in this Auction

George Condo, a contemporary American artist, has a tremendous fan following in the market in recent years. This work is more than two meters in length and width. The enigmatic composition fascinates the audience. It was estimated at HK $18 million to HK $28 million, and it was finally sold for HK $53.15 million, breaking the record of Condo in auctions!

Takeo Yamaguchi Set New Personal Record

The art work of Japanese artist Takeo Yamaguchi, after fierce bidding, was auctioned with an over-low-estimate rate of +530.21%, ranking among Top 4 in this auction and breaking the personal record of Takeo Yamaguchi. It echoes the previous work of Takeo Yamaguchi which ranks Top 1.

The Oil Painting of René Magritte Outshines Others

Top 1: Roy Lichtenstein’s Nude Series

Nude With Joyous Painting was completed in 1994, is one of the last series of nude paintings by Roy Lichtenstein from 1993 to 1997 before he passed away. The price of the project is to be inquired before the auction. It starts with US $20 million and auctioned with US $46.24 million,became Roy Lichtenstein ’s Top 3.

Top 2: Art Works of Barnnet Newman and Brice Marden

Sotheby's Hong Kong “Contemporary Art Day Sale”

Sotheby's Hong Kong presented a number of popular masterpieces of Asian and western contemporary artists at the "Contemporary Art Day Sale" on July 10. A total of 110 pieces were sold, with a total turnover of HK $136,962,500 and a turnover rate of 85.5%. 58.2% of artworks were sold with over-high-estimate price.

The Early Artwork of Liu Ye Led this Auction

The work of Chinese contemporary artist Liu Ye was on auction in 2019, causing a lot of waves. The concrete work Joyous, which was made in 1998, is 38 × 45.5cm in size and estimated at HK $3-5 million. Finally, it was sold in HK $7.37 million, became the Top 1 high price lot. The dancing angel in the painting contrasts with the cloud covered background, showing the gap between childhood and real life.

Another alabaster artwork by Anthony Gormley, contemporary British sculptor, was also sold for HK $7.375 million, with an over-low-estimate rate of + 777.98%.

Hao Liang's Bamboo Pole Theme Works are the Top 2 of the Auction

There has been a surge in momentum for the work of Hao Liang, a post-80s Chinese artist in recent years. He set a new record with his Poison Buddha 2 at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Sale on July 9. The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, which was auctioned on July 10, is among Hao Liang's first batches of works with the theme of keeping the traditional straight and vigorous bamboo pole, which has a decisive influence on his later creation. Bonhams Hong Kong "Modern And Contemporary Art"

The auction presents a series of post-war and contemporary art, street art, design furniture and limited edition prints, all of which come from artists with a hot market. The total turnover of 41 works reached HK $4,974,637, with a turnover rate of 75.6%.Among them, Richard Lin's oil paintings led the auction at a high price.

July 58 was drawn Richard Lin when he was 25 years old. This oil painting has fantastic colors and mysterious pictures, which is a rare early series of sun and moon works by Richard Lin. It was estimated at HK $1 million to HK $1.5 million, and the auction was finally completed in HK $1.62 million.
