Auction introduction: This spring, Sotheby's Hong Kong Fine Chinese Paintings is delighted to present a dazzling curation of works through three auctions: Hidden Treasures from the Liu Hankun Family Collection, Fine Chinese Paintings, and The Leshantang Collection II: Treasures of Chinese Art from the Tsai I-Ming Collection. Together, the auctions bring together more than 260 works in a captivating and visually arresting showcase of the pinnacle of modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Hidden Treasures from the Liu Hankun Family Collection features the collection of Liu Hankun, the eldest son of Liu Guojun, a prominent figure in the textiles industry. Offered to market for the first time, the collection is headlined by Zhang Daqian’s Hermit in Verdant Forest, a magnificent and exceptionally rare landscape painting exemplary of the master’s much revered meticulous composition and brushwork in the 1940s. Additionally, the collection includes spectacular and noteworthy calligraphies by distinguished scholars and literati from the mid-Qing dynasty. All proceeds from the auction will go to charitable causes. At the heart of Fine Chinese Paintings this season is a roster of remarkable masterpieces by leading artists hailing from important private collections. A significant highlight from the collection of Paul Chang’s children is Zhang Daqian’s Lady by the Lotus Screen, an exquisite and rare figure painting of remarkable composition. From the MK Lau Collection is Qi Baishi's monumental Goshawk on Towering Pine Tree, which measures at more than eight feet and is considered among one of the finest masterpieces from his oeuvre. The collection also includes significant works by renowned artists from Guangdong. Additionally, the sale features the debut of pieces from the highly acclaimed collection of Edward T. Chow, Wu Changshuo paintings formerly from the collection of Aoyama San’u, as well as an array of fine works by Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong.
