| Motivation: Photography is a tool I use to record a range
of curious adventures and intellectual pursuits. "The Image is more than an idea. It is a vortex or cluster of fused ideas and is endowed with energy." Ezra Pound (1885-1972) Ed has digitally archived thousands of unique photographs taken on numerous journeys -- many of them off the beaten track and including non-traditional documentary images of places and events that many people do not see or experience. His stock photos and digital Giclee prints (up to 3 feet by 2 feet on special papers including archival watercolor paper) are modified using computer-based techniques in lieu of formerly common darkroom methods. Some are significantly modified, and a few even manipulated compositionally, but the subject is a plain record of what was in front of the camera for a moment. Ed loves to retell a true story by selectively using color and composition. To give additional perspective (historic, geographic, or personal), he sometimes combines multiple photographs in a single print. Until the computer came along, it was not possible to so easily create, recreate and store this form of "intellectual photography," according to Ed. Digital technology should, over time, facilitate such story-telling in classical pictures that otherwise have already been labeled as cliché, he says.
